Year of the Priest
(June 19, 2009 – June 19, 2010)
As the Year of St. Paul is coming to a close on June 29, Pope Benedict has declared a Year for Priests beginning on June 19, the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The year will conclude on June 19, 2010 with an international gathering of priests in Rome.
The Year for Priests marks the 150th anniversary of the death of St. John Vianney, Curé (pastor) of Ars in France. The Pope has also declared St. John Vianney the universal patron of priests.
St. John (Jean-Baptiste-Marie) was born on May 8, 1786, ordained a priest in 1815, then three years later was appointed pastor of Ars, where he spent the rest of his priestly life. He was well known as a confessor, receiving penitents from all over the world for 16 hours every day. His life was marked by simplicity, patience and charity. It was reported that even staunchest sinners were converted by his words. He died on August 4, 1859, and was canonized on May 31, 1925.
In his message on the Curé of Ars on the 200th anniversary of the saint’s birthday, Pope John Paul II wrote,
“His example cannot be forgotten. More than ever we need his witness, his intercession, in order to face the situations of our times when, in spite of a certain number of hopeful signs, evangelization is being contradicted by a growing secularization, when spiritual discipline is being neglected, when many are losing sight of the Kingdom of God, when often, even in the pastoral ministry, there is a too exclusive concern for the social aspect, for temporal aims. In the last century the Curé of Ars had to face difficulties which were perhaps of a different kind but which were no less serious. By his life and work he represented, for the society of his time, a great evangelical challenge that bore astonishing fruits of conversion. Let us not doubt that he still presents to us today that great evangelical challenge.”
